Brian Peters
The uNi Coffeehouse Concert Series presents Brian Peters, from England's folk music scene, on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Peters is one of the English folk scene's great all-arounders: a compelling singer, a top "squeezebox" player and a skilled guitarist. Special guest Jeff Davis will join him on several selections. Davis is a master of old-time fiddle, banjo, mandocello, guitar, spoons, jaw's harps and more. One of the U.K.'s best anglo-concertina players, Peters is just as good on melodeon (button accordion), and internationally known as a singer of traditional ballads. Peters delivers a repertoire of startling variety, so alongside those classic songs from the tradition, and lively English dance tunes, the audience will hear newer songs, his own instrumental compositions, and wild squeezebox excursions into ragtime or blues. His stage act bristles with energy and wit. Peters presents his material with warmth and unforced humor to appeal to the casual listener as well as the committed folk fan. Peters has played major folk festivals in Britain, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada, as well as touring extensively in Europe. He has collaborated with many British and American musicians, is in demand as an instrumental teacher and workshop leader, and has recorded eight solo and two duo CDs. English Dance and Song called him "A front-rank English musician on melodeon and concertina." Enda Kenny, of Folk in Victoria (Australia) said it best: "His playing is inventive and without fault, his vocals are strong and evocative, and his stage patter holds your interest while you are holding your sides. This guy is bloody good" The concert will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Society Meetinghouse, 245 Porter Lake Drive, in Springfield, Mass.
