With romantic escapes – and bucket-list excursions – in mind, Prime reached out to Deane for advice on new travel rules, luggage fees and savvy packing. Here’s what she shared:
Q: The TSA frequently modifies its rulings for airline passengers. What changes have there been in recent months, and for 2024?
“The changes that travelers will see at airports such as Bradley International in Connecticut include Enhanced Screening Procedures – The TSA at BDL airport is continuously refining its screening techniques. Investments in security technologies, such as scanners for carry-on bags and improved body scanning systems, have been made to improve the accuracy and efficiency of security screenings.
“The TSA PreCheck and Clear Programs – These expedited screening programs allow travelers to experience a faster and more streamlined security process. TSA PreCheck enables eligible passengers to move through security without removing shoes, belts, or laptops, while Clear uses biometric technology for identity verification. Each has a fee; however, they can save you time at the airport.”
Q: Baggage fees have become sticking point for airline travel. With the 2024 travel season heating up, what are recommendations to minimize, or bypass these fees?
“Airlines typically charge baggage fees based on various factors: Ticket class – higher fare classes often include complimentary baggage allowances; economy or basic fares may incur fees for checked baggage. Weight and size – oversized or overweight bags commonly incur additional charges. Route and carrier – different airlines have varying fee structures. Some may charge more for international flights or have specific regulations for certain routes.
“To minimize baggage fees, take the following steps. Familiarize yourself with the baggage policies of the airline you’re flying with. Check the allowed dimensions, weight limits, and any free baggage allowances. Pack efficiently and opting for carry-on luggage can save you money. Many airlines allow at least one free carry-on bag in addition to a personal item.
“Join frequent flyer programs or loyalty clubs: Some airlines offer waived baggage fees or increased baggage allowances for their loyal customers. Being a member of these programs can help you save on baggage fees. Consider booking higher fare classes if they include complimentary baggage allowances. Sometimes, paying a slightly higher fare can save you more in baggage fees. Invest in lightweight luggage to avoid surpassing weight limits. Packing cubes and compression bags can also help maximize space.
“Ensure your bags comply with the airline’s size and weight restrictions. Use luggage scales or check measurements at home to avoid surprises at the airport. If traveling with family or friends, consolidating belongings into fewer checked bags can help save on multiple baggage fees. And lastly, explore any credit card benefits; some credit cards offer perks like waived baggage fees or reimbursements for travel-related expenses. Check if your credit card includes such benefits.
Q: Everyone wants to arrive at their destination with their clothes in wear-it-now shape. What are some packing tips to help travelers make the most of the luggage they’re carrying?
“Invest in high-quality luggage that suits your travel needs. Consider the duration and purpose of your trip when selecting between a suitcase, backpack, or carry-on. Opt for durable, well-designed pieces with compartments to organize your clothing efficiently.
“Before packing, plan your outfits based on the activities and weather at your destination. Create a list to avoid over-packing and to ensure you have the essentials covered.
“Roll, don’t fold! Rolling your clothes instead of folding them not only saves space but also minimizes wrinkles. This technique works wonders, especially for t-shirts, jeans, and casual wear. For delicate fabrics like silk or dresses, consider tissue paper or garment bags to prevent creasing. Separate clothing by fabric type to prevent wrinkles and damage. Pack heavier, more wrinkle-resistant items at the bottom and lighter, delicate pieces on top. Layering helps protect more fragile materials from getting crushed.
“ Utilize packing cubes or compression bags: packing cubes or compression bags are a traveler’s best friend. They help compartmentalize and compress clothing, maximizing space and minimizing wrinkles. Group similar items together in these cubes for easy access. Make use of your shoes and accessories to save space. Fill shoes with socks, belts, or small items to optimize every inch of your luggage. Store accessories like jewelry in small pouches to prevent tangling or damage.
“Resist the urge to over pack. Stick to versatile clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched. This not only saves space but also gives you more outfit options without lugging around excessive luggage.
“For clothing prone to wrinkles, consider using wrinkle-release sprays or hanging garments in the bathroom while showering to let the steam naturally smooth out wrinkles. For those essential items that may wrinkle despite your efforts, a portable steamer or travel-sized iron can be a lifesaver. They take up minimal space and can quickly refresh your clothes upon arrival.
“Once you arrive at your destination, unpack as soon as possible. Hang clothes to allow any remaining wrinkles to fall out naturally. If needed, use the available iron or steamer to touch up before wearing.”
