As Program Manager for the Massachusetts Office of Aging and Independence’s 50+ Job Seeker’s Program, Eric Elmendorf combines his personal experience as a 50+ job seeker and his years of experience in human resources to help fellow older candidates navigate the modern world of employment applications and interviews.

Like many mature applicants, Elmendorf said he faced limited interview opportunities, salary negotiations complicated by experience level, and implicit biases about older workers’ adaptability and technological proficiency in his personal job search, and he has leveraged that experience to create programs designed to help fellow mature jobs seekers succeed.

Prime asked Elmendorf to outline what the 50+Job seekers Program is and how it can help mature applicants land their next career.

        Here’s what he shared::

Q: What is 50+ Job Seekers and who is this program designed for?

“Since 2015, the 50+ Job Seekers Program has been dedicated to addressing a critical gap in employment support. Our mission centers on providing comprehensive assistance to job seekers over 50 who are navigating today’s competitive employment landscape.

“The modern job market presents unique challenges for experienced workers. Many find themselves unexpectedly unemployed after decades of stable employment, leaving them feeling disoriented and unprepared for the job search process. Others have chosen early retirement only to discover that they miss the fulfillment and structure that meaningful work provides. Additionally, economic pressures often necessitate a return to the workforce for financial stability.

“For many in this demographic, the job search landscape has transformed dramatically since their last career transition. Remember newspaper classifieds and in-person applications?  All that has evolved into a digital environment requiring updated skills and strategies.

“Our program recognizes that many 50+ Job Seekers face common obstacles:

  • Outdated resumes that may not have been revised in decades
  • Unfamiliarity with online job boards and application tracking systems now used by many employers
  • Lack of experience with cover letter writing
  • Limited knowledge of professional networking platforms like LinkedIn
  • Concerns about age discrimination in the hiring process.”

Q: What types of services does the program provide to help someone looking to enter the job market at midlife?

“The 50+ Job Seekers Program offers online, on demand and in-person workshops designed to address these specific challenges. Our flexible format ensures accessibility regardless of location or schedule constraints.

        “Workshop Topics Include:

  • Resume Writing and Optimization: Modernizing your professional presentation for today’s employer
  • Online Application Navigation: Mastering digital application systems and job boards
  • Age Discrimination Awareness: Understanding your rights and strategies for addressing bias
  • Strategic Networking: Leveraging your existing network of friends, colleagues, and acquaintances
  • LinkedIn Mastery: Building a professional online presence and connecting with opportunities
  • Interview Preparation: Refreshing skills and addressing common concerns for mature job seekers.”

Q: How can a job seeker access this program? Is there a cost?

“Folks can visit our website at 50plusjobseekers.org to explore our complete schedule of upcoming programs and resources.

“We are completely funded through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Office of Aging and Independence.  All of our services are provided at no cost.

“For assistance or questions about our services, you can reach out directly through the “Contact Us” link prominently displayed at the top of our website. We’re here to help provide the support and guidance you need to successfully navigate your career transition.

“For mature workers –your experience is an asset. Let us help you effectively communicate your value to potential employers and find the meaningful employment opportunity you deserve.”
